2024 Global Internal Audit Standards
The new Global Internal Audit Standards have been released on January 9, 2024 and will become effective January 9, 2025. Early adoption is encouraged. The previous version, the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing, released in 2017, remains approved for use during a one-year transition period.
The Standards guide the worldwide professional practice of internal auditing, are principle-based, and serve as a basis for evaluating and elevating the quality of the internal audit function. At the heart of the Standards are 15 guiding principles that enable effective internal auditing. Each principle is supported by standards that contain requirements, considerations for implementation, and examples of evidence of conformance. Together, these elements help internal auditors achieve the principles and fulfill the Purpose of Internal Auditing.

Dear Members,
Hello 2025! I hope this letter finds you all rested from a holiday season filled with memories of family and friends. As we enter a new year, I want to take a moment to share encouraging news for those we are in service of and the Chapter.
Our Chapter continues to grow, reflecting the growth in our profession and the resilience of our economy. Last year we crossed the milestone of having over 3000 members (i.e. we currently have over 3100 devoted professionals calling the IIA Toronto Chapter home).
The Chapter celebrated its 80th anniversary on April 25, 2024 and saw the return of our in -person Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Hart House (on April 26, 2024), marking the start of our 80th year events. Given the success of this time-honoured event, the 2025 AGM will also be at Hart House on April 30, 2025.
The success of our programming events in 2024, has prompted the continuation of our hybrid learning events to ensure we are reaching all of our members, near and far, with quality continuing professional education offerings. We have taken note of the sessions that were highest in demand, well attended, and garnered the most positive feedback in the generation of our 2025 programming line up (including sessions on ethics, fraud, specialized IT topics, events in Southwestern Ontario, etc.).
The Chapter was awarded the privilege of hosting the 2025 International IIA Conference, July 14 through 16, in Toronto. The conference will be a hybrid event, ensuring members from across the globe, have a variety of opportunities to attend. Keep your eyes open for announcements on the International Conference, as there will be a multitude of ways to be an active participant (e.g. speaker, attendee, volunteer, exhibitor, sponsor, etc.). Consequently, the annual IIA Toronto Chapter Symposium will be paused in 2025, to restart in 2026.
Still to come are our final 80th anniversary events, new thought leadership development, expanded student awareness programs, the introduction of local CIA learning initiatives, and the conclusion of many other Chapter activities in service of our members.
I look forward to the Chapter activities for 2025; in a new year, with a new focus, and achieving great new results.
Sincerely,
Sharon Mohip CA, CPA, CIA, CFE, CICA.

Geopolitical Risk: The Impact of Tariffs and Other Risks for Public Sector Internal Auditors
May 14, 2025 | 8:30AM – 10:00AM
Geopolitical risk is having a profound impact on the public sector and corporate world in Ontario, Canada and around the world. We have seen various conflicts impacting supply chains for many organizations and tariffs impacting the flow of goods and services around the world. The implementation of tariffs usually is met with counter-tariffs causing the cost of goods to increase for organizations and for end consumers. Careful consideration of the risks to organizations is required and despite the macro level effects, there is a role for internal audit teams to support their organizations.
