The accounting CIA Challenge Exam syllabus is changing

We are excited to announce that the accounting CIA Challenge Exam syllabus will be updated to align with the new Global Internal Audit Standards™ in 2026.

During the 2025 program cycle, a comprehensive study will be conducted to ensure the syllabus reflects the latest standards and best practices in internal auditing.

The exact dates of the updated exam's release will be communicated in the coming months.

The accounting CIA Challenge Exam is now available through a test center-only delivery model. Online proctoring has been discontinued to preserve the integrity of IIA certification programs and enhance the testing experience for all candidates.

Application Window: April – September

  1. Gather required documents (letter of good standing from the qualified accounting body, government-issued photo ID).
  2. Create an account or sign into the CCMS.
  3. Select "Apply for Certified Internal Auditor".
  4. Select "CIA Challenge Program for Qualified Chartered Accountants and Certified Public Accountants".
  5. Submit your application and pay for your order.

Take the certification exam

Testing Windows: February, June, August, or November

  1. Go to "Manage Program" via the CCMS.
  2. Register for your CIA exam.
  3. Schedule your CIA exam.

You will not be able to register for the exam until your documents and application are approved.

Get your certification

  1. Receive your certification.
  2. Access your certificate via the CCMS. A printed copy may be obtained for a fee.

Submission of proof of experience is not required for the CIA Challenge program.

Important After your application is approved, you have 180 days to register, schedule, and sit for the exam.
There are no provisions for program or exam extensions for the Challenge Exam.
The examination is only offered in the testing windows as listed above.

CIA Challenge Exam renewal and already certified resources

Pricing is applicable in the United States, Canada, and select countries throughout the world. Pricing may differ in countries where exams are administered through agreements with National Institutes.

Applicable taxes may be collected in accordance with local laws and regulations.

Candidates residing in the United Kingdom/Republic of Ireland or South Africa must be IIA members to apply for the CIA, CRMA, IAP, and CIA Challenge Exam.
