Welcome to the IIA Vancouver Island Chapter

The Vancouver Island Chapter of the IIA was approved by the International Board of the IIA in March 2007. This was the culmination of an initial idea and a lot of work from the Vancouver Chapter, including Tom Peerless, Jeremy Picco and Doug Cruikshank. The Vancouver Island Chapter Formation Committee consisted of Greg Diemer, David Fairbotham, Jackie Bruneau and Stephen Ward.

The objective of the Vancouver Island Chapter is to provide opportunities on Vancouver Island for professional development and networking.

Chapter Officers

Ever since its inception in 2007, the IIA Vancouver Island Chapter has been involved in the development of the Internal Audit profession. The chapter believes in not only providing exceptional professional development, but in building capacity in the local profession. We do this by encouraging and supporting IIA designations and also providing Scholarships for local students. The chapter provides study material and awards, as budget allows, to members who successfully complete IIA designation exams.

Additionally, a past Board member developed the Acct 385 Internal Audit course that is now offered at Camosun College and instructs the class as well. Annually we award a $1,000 scholarship to a student from this course, who both performs well in the class and also writes a scholarship essay on a set topic. The chapter also worked with Camosun College, assisting the college in achieving acceptance into the IIA’s Internal Audit Academic Awareness Program.

The Vancouver Island Chapter is continuing to strive to benefit the Members by offering high-value professional development to members and to support the growth and awareness of the IIA profession on the island. As I complete my first year as President of this Chapter, I continue to be impressed with the Board that we have in place and that will take all of us forward.

We continue to support our members who work in town or virtually by offering both virtual and in-person events. In the last year, we held one in-person event, with another in-person event soon to be announced for May. We will also continue to offer virtual events in the upcoming year. Our goal is to provide you with the tools, training and networking opportunities needed to adapt to the changing landscape and emerging risks while delivering on the internal audit value proposition.

A collective effort, led by our Programs Chairs with contributions from the Board, we will continue to navigate through the virtual world with a return to in-person, and are committed to bringing quality learning for the benefit of our members.

We continue to have success from the Academic Relations standpoint. We are continuing to support Camosun College as they offer an internal auditing course and have had student participation in our PD events. The student’s inquisitiveness and our connection to them will bolster future mentorship.

The success and achievements of the Vancouver Island Chapter are a result of your interest, dedication, support, and involvement. Thank you to everyone who has attended events, sent words of encouragement and given your skills to this wonderful Chapter.
